WordPress User Roles & Permissions

WordPress comes with a user role management system which defines what a specific user can and cannot do on your website. Knowing these user roles and permissions will help you determine which roles to assign your team members.

What type of account do you have? I’ve probably given you an Author account to start with. If you’re an experienced WordPress user you could start with an Administrator account.

What role you have will also determine what you can and cannot do. If you can’t find certain sections in your WP Dashboard it could be because you don’t have the an Administrator account. Check your WP profile information on your private knowledge base. You can always ask me, or if I didn’t create your website contact your website creator.

When WordPress is installed, there are five default user roles:

    • Administrator
    • Editor
    • Author
    • Contributor
    • Subscriber
